Annihilation
Annihilation (Jeff Vandermeer, 2014)
How I stumbled upon it: Two good friends were reading it and I needed to jump on the bandwagon!
What it's about: Annihilation is the first book of the Southern Reach Trilogy and tells the story of four women who head into Area X in search of the mysteries inside it. Area X is secret area where the laws of physics and biology seem to be warped and what they find is miraculous and astounding.
What I thought: I was captivated by the story. It’s a mix of sci-fi and thriller that keeps you hooked + curious. The concept for Area X and this all-female expedition crew was so unique and the writing was so vivid + unsettling that I read the whole book in a day, and didn’t sleep for a week. Disclaimer: the book is way different than the movie and I really did not enjoy the movie at all.
