Rainbirds (Clarissa Goenawan, 2018)

How I stumbled upon it: It was my Book of the Month pick for March!

What it's about: Ren Ishida is in a small town outside of Tokyo investigating in the aftermath of his sister’s murder.  She has been isolated from their family for years and the more time he spends in Akakawa, the more he learns of his sister, her past, and his place in the world.  It’s definitely a slow-burning mystery, but without the quick plot twists of a Gone Girl.

What I thought: First, I don’t know much about Japan, so learning a bit more about Japanese culture is fascinating to me.  I thought Ren was an interesting character and I really enjoyed unspinning the backstory with how his sister came to be so isolated in a tiny town full of eccentric locals.  You should note that while it is thought-provoking, it’s not the quickest book. It’s less of a beach read and more of a slow summer simmer.
