The Oracle Year
The Oracle Year (Charles Soule, 2018)
How I stumbled upon it: It was my Book of the Month pick!
What it's about: Will Dando wakes up one morning with 108 predictions about the future. As they start coming true, he starts publishing them anonymously online as “The Oracle.” The problem is that “The Oracle” has immense economic, social, and global clout and its influence only grows with every prediction they roll out. Is someone (eg. the government) behind these predictions? Should he sell them for money to big corporations? And what does it even mean to be ethical when everything you know both helps and harms different groups?
What I thought: This book reads like a very current and fast-paced sci-fi-ish movie. You never dwell on any chapter or topic for too long before being ushered to the next thing. While that could come off as jumpy, I found it helped to keep me engaged with the subject matter. If you like tech-y, updated sci-fi with fiction, business and econ undertones, this is a good one for you to try!
